The Kennel Club Good Citizen Puppy Scheme and IDTC Newcomers Course
Socialising puppies from the outset is very important which is why the IDTC as been running the Kennel Club Good Citizen Puppy course since it’s inception in 1992 and prior to that we ran our own Puppy course. The KC Scheme, along with our Newcomers course is the stepping stone for all dogs, regardless of size, age or breed.
The course aims to provide a means of socialising dogs and to lay down a foundation for education and training. On completion dogs will respond to their handers and the handlers will have an awareness of their responsibilities of dog ownership. The inclusion of play adds an extra dimension to a dogs life and is used to make training fun. Constructive play and suitable incentives are encouraged.
This eight-week course is for all new members and comprises of 6 weeks in your Puppy/Newcomers group followed by two weeks in a Beginner class of your choice, after which members can choose to continue their training with further classes in either pet obedience, competitive obedience or agility.
A maximum of eight dogs and handlers attend each course, which is run by a minimum of two trainers giving a good ratio of trainers to handlers.
As numbers are limited it is advisable to reserve your place as soon as possible.
The 45 minute classes take place at our training club in Collings Road, St Peter Port at 6pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.
There is no age limit but dogs must be fully vaccinated before starting their course. Please bring your vaccination record on the first night, which will be photo copied by the trainer, without proof of vaccination your dog will not be allowed into the clubroom but you can observe the class.
Dogs of all ages are welcome, but as the majority of attendees are puppies the courses are not suitable for dogs with problems. If you need advice as to whether or not this course would benefit your dog please use the Contact Page to email us.
We appreciate that many members of our community have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions, and as a non-profit organisation, run by volunteers we always aim to keep our fees affordable to all.
